Indian officials tell poor people to start eating rats: ‘The beauty is we have billions of them’ August 19, 2008

Filed under: India, Rats — Mazaqah @ 6:53 am

Indians living in one of the country’s poorest state have been told to eat rats.

The rodents are already consumed by an impoverished caste in Bihar called the Musahars or ‘rat-eaters’  -  but most people find the idea distasteful.

Now state officials are asking hotels and restaurants to devise interesting ways of poaching, roasting or stewing the meat.

‘Once people accept it as just another meat like chicken or mutton, it will become popular,’ said Vijay Prakash, Bihar’s social welfare secretary.

Rat meat is already cooked in some Bihar villages and Mr Prakash’s mission is to spread the taste to urban areas because poor rat-catchers will only make enough money once demand grows.

‘It is very high in protein and the beauty is that we have billions of rats,’ he said.

He wants rat snacks served at bus and train stations, and roadside cafes.

‘In the countryside, in roadside cafes, people have rats as a snack with drinks,’ he added.

Mr Prakash’s objective is to give Bihar’s poor a source of nourishment and income.

‘India has about eight rats per person. If rat meat sells for 50 rupees a kilo and each rat weighs a kilo  -  field rats are fat and heavy  -  then a poor family can make 150 rupees a day by catching just three rats.

‘Once it becomes as normal as chicken, then I will encourage people to start rat farming.’

Filed under: Bollywood, India, Natasha Paracha, Pakistan — Mazaqah @ 10:54 am

Miss Pakistan World 2008, Natasha Paracha, has received several offers to act in Bollywood movies.

The 23-year-old beauty queen told NDTV.com that she is at present studying these offers and scripts and soon take a decision on them.

”I have received few offers from Bollywood. I want to look into them before taking a call,” she said.

Natasha, who lives in New York and works at United Nations with International Energy Renewable Organisation, however, refused to divulge further details about the offers, because of confidentiality.

”Personally I want to do a movie, which deals with issues that are dear to my heart women’s rights and children,” Natasha said.

An avid fan of Bollywood movies, Natasha said she watches a lot and the recent super hit Om Shanti Om and Sarkar Raj are her latest additions to her favourites.

Of all the Bollywood stars, she admires Sushmita Sen a lot the former Miss World and wants to follow her footsteps.

”Sushmita Sen is not only a great actress but she has also been involved in raising awareness about the issues which are dear to my heart,” Natasha said.

”She (Sushmita) has adopted a child. She is definitely somebody whom I admire and follow,” Natasha said.

Using her celebrity status, she has been working in villages of Pakistan especially those of the Pak-occupied-Kashmir through NGO Vision of Development – run by her. ”My goal is to work towards women’s issue and children,” she said.

Natasha argued that exchange of artists can act as a catalyst for peace between the two countries.

”I definitely believe that the entertainment industry can help in mitigating tension between India and Pakistan. There is need to allow Pakistani artists to go into India and work in Indian cinema as well as Indian entertainment industry and vice versa,” she said.

The troubled fast bowlers 18th month ban has been suspended by the Lahore High Court and is now free t play cricket. Shoaib launched an appeal against the ban which will now be heard in September.”The court has allowed Shoaib Akhtar to play cricket and the petition will be heard after the summer vacation,” said Judge Zahid Hussain.

Shoaib must still pay the £57,000 fine imposed on him in April.

“Shoaib is temporarily allowed to play until the petition is heard, but he will have to give the fine,” said Pakistan Cricket Board lawyer Taffazul Rizvi.

Shoaib has now set his sights on playing in the Champions Trophy in September – and warming up for that tournament by playing English county cricket.

“I am keeping fit and I’m going to England and try to play some county or league matches there and get in shape for the Champions Trophy,” he said.

“I owe my name and fame to Pakistan, so I will never defame my country. I want to win the Champions Trophy for my country and for that I need everyone’s support.”

Shoaib will have to fight for his place in the team as Pakistani camp is already overflowing with talented fast bowlers. Lets see for how long can both Muhammed Asif and Shoaib Akhtar can keep away from trouble.

Dead baby back from the dead in Mumbai hospital June 21, 2008

Dead baby comes alive in Mumbai hospital

Hospital authorities in India have ordered an independent inquiry after a baby was declared dead, only to make an apparently miraculous return to life.

The baby girl – born in the city of Mumbai (Bombay) – was diagnosed as stillborn on Monday night.

But she astonished her distraught family by gurgling as they took her off to the cemetery the next day.

It is thought she revived after the effect of drugs – given to her mother during a complicated labour – wore off.

Hospital authorities say they are now investigating possible negligence by staff who attended the birth.

‘Limp at birth’

“We have to fix responsibility,” said Dr Suleiman Merchant, acting dean of Sion Hospital in Mumbai where the child was delivered.

“The doctors who were on duty are being questioned and the inquiry will last the entire day.”

Correspondents say that it is not clear when or even if the results of the independent inquiry will be made public.

Dr Merchant said that the 30-year-old mother of the child – who was seven months pregnant – suffered life threatening convulsions and high blood pressure over the weekend, which required powerful medicines.

He said that that the doctors believed that the baby – who was limp at birth – had no heart beat and no pulse.

She was given a death certificate on Tuesday morning and two hours later her body was handed over to her parents.

But later, when the effect of medicines wore off, Dr Merchant said that the baby “showed attempts to breathe”.

“Under such circumstances, it would appear that doctors had no reason to assume that the baby was dead,” he said. “There is on the face of it a case of negligence to be answered.”

As the grieving parents made their way to the cemetery, the baby reportedly started gurgling and was rushed back to the hospital.

She is reported still to be in a critical condition and is on a ventilator.

Medical experts say the most likely explanation for what happened is that drugs given to the mother suppressed the baby’s heart beat – which would have grown stronger once the effects of the drugs wore off.

Pakistan’s Junoon light up Kashmir May 26, 2008

Filed under: India, Kashmir, Pakistan, Salman Ahmed, junoon — Mazaqah @ 10:03 pm

Journalist Zahid Rafiq witnessed a controversial concert in Indian-administered Kashmir at which star billing went to Pakistani band Junoon, which is well-known for publicly raising controversial issues such as HIV/Aids, the Kashmir dispute and corruption in Pakistan.

Kashmir has never seen a music event like it. Every guitar riff made bodies sway in passion.

The thumping of the bass speakers matched the beating of the fans’ hearts. Feet tapped, heads rocked, lips were in sync with the lyrics.

Junoon, one of the best Pakistani bands, was live on stage in Indian-administered Kashmir beside the shimmering waters of Srinagar’s Dal Lake.

People had waited anxiously for Junoon’s lead singer, Salman Ahmad, to appear in Sunday’s concert.

Even before he sang the first note of his famous song, “Yaaro yehi dosti hay”, the audience was on its feet.

Fans pressed closer to the stage.

“I gave the security a slip and entered into the VIP enclosure. I wouldn’t even mind the commandos hitting me,” one student, Beenish, told me.

“I wanted to catch a glimpse of Salman. I just love him and just imagine – he has come from Pakistan.”

Opposition

The concert had been organised by a non-government organisation, the South Asia Foundation.

It was also a part of celebrations held to mark the inauguration of the Kashmir Study Institute at Kashmir University.

Junoon, a Sufi pop band, is the first international group to perform in the conflict-torn Kashmir for the past two decades.

The event – for which entrance was by invitation card only – caused political controversy.

Leading Kashmiri militant, Syed Salahuddin, head of the Hizb-ul Mujahideen group, had urged the Pakistan government not to allow Junoon to travel to Srinagar.

He argued that the performance would have a negative impact on the “disputed status” of Kashmir and would send a wrong signal to the international community that “Kashmir was an integral part of India”.

The student union body of the Kashmir University had also protested against the concert. As a result, many students stayed away.

The South Asia Foundation had anticipated up to 10,000 people in the audience. But the numbers were well below that.

Security worries

But that didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of those who did attend.

One young man who hadn’t received an invitation card managed to secure one for 500 rupees ($12).

“I bought the card from the money I had to pay for my tuitions but missing the concert was not an option. I had to make it here today,” he said, gesturing to me to keep quiet.

“I want to hear him sing “Bulla shah”.

In a separate enclosure, girls were up on their feet, their arms outstretched and hair flying. “It is amazing. This is the first concert I have attended and it is great,” one said.

The heavy security did spoil the day for some.

“I felt like dancing sometimes but the number of guns around constantly made me feel that I am not welcome here,” one student, Asif, said.

“The security guards pushing the people from the audience never let me go into the musical mode.”

The high-point of the concert was Junoon’s first chartbuster and their most famous song “Sayonee”.

Even the VIP area was rocking. No one could resist joining in.

Farooq Abdullah, former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, was the first one to sing along from the VIP area.

He made Director General of police, Kuldeep Khoda, raise his hands too. And then, the other dignitaries joined in.

The audience made Salman sing “Sayonee” again and this time the entire audience joined in.

It was a concert that will stay long in the memory.
