A series of bomb explosions have killed at least 60 people in the western Indian city of Jaipur, officials have said. Dozens were injured.

About seven blasts went off in quick succession in the old city area, which was crowded with early evening shoppers. Witnesses spoke of panic and then a stampede.

Jaipur is a major tourist destination about 260km (160 miles) from the capital, New Delhi. The first bomb exploded near its most famous landmark, the Palace of Winds.

The head of state police said the bombings were “obviously a terrorist act”, but there has so far been no claim of responsibility.

There have been sporadic bomb attacks around India in recent years. The police have had little success in bringing prosecutions.
