Rocketman

SOARING 8000ft above the ground at 160mph, Yves Rossy looks just like Buzz Lightyear.

But unlike the Toy Story character, the Swiss jet-pack daredevil really can fly.

The former pilot, 48, strapped himself into the home-made carbon fibre wing yesterday then launched himself from a plane over the Alpine resort of Bex.

Its four jet burners ignited as he leapt and he reached top speed for more than five minutes before his parachutes carried him back to the ground.

Rocketman Rossy described it as “an amazing sensation”.

Vatican says aliens could exist

http://blog.wired.com/photos/uncategorized/2007/11/05/aliens.jpg

The Pope’s chief astronomer says that life on Mars cannot be ruled out.

Writing in the Vatican newspaper, the astronomer, Father Gabriel Funes, said intelligent beings created by God could exist in outer space.

Father Funes, director of the Vatican Observatory near Rome, is a respected scientist who collaborates with universities around the world.

The search for forms of extraterrestrial life, he says, does not contradict belief in God.

The official Vatican newspaper headlines his article ‘Aliens Are My Brother’.

‘Free from sin’

Just as there are multiple forms of life on earth, so there could exist intelligent beings in outer space created by God. And some aliens could even be free from original sin, he speculates.

Asked about the Catholic Church’s condemnation four centuries ago of the Italian astronomer and physicist, Galileo, Father Funes diplomatically says mistakes were made, but it is time to turn the page and look towards the future.

Science and religion need each other, and many astronomers believe in God, he assures readers.

To strengthen its scientific credentials, the Vatican is organising a conference next year to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of the author of the Origin of Species, Charles Darwin.

3) Strings:

As days come closer, the excitement surrounding Strings’s new album, Koi Aanay Wala Hai is touching new heights. The first promos of the new album are out and they are looking really good.

“Koi Aane Wala Hai” will be released in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Dubai on May 16, the first time an album by Strings has been issued in different markets across the world simultaneously.

The decision to simultaneously release the album in different markets is aimed at countering piracy. “We want our fans to have ready access to the album. Fans who can t access it will download it from the internet,” he said.

“Besides, we want to tap new markets like Bangladesh and Nepal, where the rock scene is booming,” Kapadia said. “There are a lot of people in these countries who are into our type of music.” Kapadia and his band-mate Bilal Maqsood have already completed two videos for the album - one for the title track that features Bollywood actor John Abraham and another for the song “Jaago”.

“We will also be making a third video for the album,” Kapadia said. “The video for Koi Aane Wala Hai , directed by Ravi Udyavar, is very interesting. And of course, it features John Abraham,” Kapadia, who was here with Maqsood to participate in the Olympic torch relay, told reporters.

Joint first we have none other then.

1) Nawaz Sharif and Zaradi.

http://media3.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/photo/2007/12/29/PH2007122901618.jpg

Pakistan faced a new political crisis on Tuesday after former premier Nawaz Sharif pulled his party’s ministers out of the country’s six-week-old coalition government, officials said.

The nine ministers from Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) stepped down after the coalition failed to meet a Monday deadline on how and when to reinstate judges sacked by President Pervez Musharraf last year.

The eventual reinstatement of the judges is likely to cause a major headache for embattled former army chief Musharraf, a key US ally, who considers them hostile to his rule.

Justine Henin-Hardenne retires

Justine Henin, retires unexpectedly from tennis on Wednesday.

http://www.tennisserver.com/turbo/images/turbo_03_12/JustineHenin7.jpg

Henin dominated on the clay in Paris, winning four of the last five French Opens, including the last three in a row. In an era of women’s tennis that is defined by stronger and bigger athletes taking over — to the point where Martina Hingis rationalized retiring due to her inability to fight the trend — Henin refused to concede. Similar to Jim Courier, she outworked the competition. Rare was the tournament that I didn’t run into her in the gym. She was the definition of a gym rat, and her increased physical strength helped her overcome some of her mental frailties to the point that the results were staggering. She won seven majors, with only Wimbledon escaping her, and she had been the World’s No. 1 ranked player for 117 weeks when she decided to call it quits.

http://d.yimg.com/eur.yimg.com/ng/sp/empics/4734329

The trademark of her game was her backhand. Never has a female player of her size contorted her body with such artistry and produced such an effective shot. Her backhand was a true testament to her impeccable timing and technical precision. During a Wimbledon telecast I once heard John McEnroe, himself the ultimate artist, describe Henin’s backhand as “one of the great shots in tennis.”

With her favorite tournament on the horizon, the three-time defending French Open champion concluded that she no longer had the adrenaline the tournament normally evokes and that the work no longer matched the reward.

Azlan shah Pakistan beat Canada 2-1

IPOH (Malaysia): Pakistan came back from a goal down on Monday to edge Canada 2-1 and register their third win in the Sultan Azlan Shah hockey tournament being held in Malaysia.

Three-time champions Pakistan now have 10 points from three wins and a draw. They have two matches left to play against Belgium on Wednesday and India on Thursday. Canada, meanwhile, have three points from one win and two defeats but surprised Pakistan by taking a lead in the first minute through Kullar Bindi.

Sukhwinder Singh’s through pass was delicately steered into the goal by Bindi. Pakistan forwards led by Shakeel Abbasi and Rehan Butt created a number of chances in the first-half but failed to score. They kept up the pressure in the second-half but had to wait until the last six minutes of the match to score two quick goals within three minutes.

Defender Muhammad Saqlain’s cross from the left was deflected into the goal by Butt in the 64th minute. Saqlain scored Pakistan’s winning goal three minutes later, off a penalty corner set-piece. “We were under pressure with just minutes left on the clock. However, I am relieved that we scored two goals in the last six minutes of the match to collect full points,” said Pakistan coach Naveed Alam.

Two Supreme Courts being considered to resolve judges issue

By Rauf Klasra

ISLAMABAD: Two parallel Supreme Courts are being quietly discussed in Pakistan as part of a draft constitutional package to resolve the complex issue of
the deposed judges’ restoration.
The proposal envisages one Supreme Court to be headed by the deposed chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry dealing only with criminal and civil cases
and the other by the incumbent Chief Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar, which would be looking after the constitutional matters. It will also have all the suo
motu powers.
Highly-placed sources close to the presidential camp revealed that the new constitutional court to be headed by Justice Dogar, whom Musharraf and Asif
Zardari do not want to lose, would be named as the Federal Constitutional Court (FCC), which would be exclusively empowered to deal with all the constitutional
issues, such as the interpretation of the Constitution, the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), constitutional controversies, the validity of President
Musharraf and most importantly the suo motu actions.
Sources said the court, to be headed by Iftikhar Chaudhry, would be a sort of an appellate court on the high courts of the four provinces. But the court
headed by Justice Dogar would handle the real issues that worry the presidency and the Zardari House.
Likewise, the new constitutional package also envisages the formation of a parliamentary committee to scrutinise the judges as it was envisaged in the
Charter of Democracy.
This correspondent made several calls to Law Minister Farooq H Naek to get his point of view but he did not pick up his mobile phone. He did not even answer
an SMS sent to him. Several calls were also made to a member of the constitutional committee Raza Rabbani and Aitzaz Ahsan but they too could not be reached.
The new proposal contemplates the creation of a Federal Constitution Court, to be headed by Justice Dogar with seven judges on the bench. A separate Supreme
Court of Pakistan to deal with civil and criminal appeals would be headed by Iftikhar Chaudhry.
This court will consist of the deposed colleagues along with some of the PCO judges. Sources claimed that if approved and enacted by parliament, the existing
structure of the superior judiciary would be altogether changed into two distinct entities.
An important impact of this proposed amendment over the life of common citizen would be withering away of the writ jurisdiction, as provided under Article
199 of the Constitution, and all five writs shall be exclusively entertainable by the federal Constitution alone.
The status of both the courts with perks and privilege of the judges shall be at par and judges from one court to another court shall be transferable through
exercise of executive authority. The proposed arrangements being discussed further envisages that the Federal Constitutional Court would be the only competent
forum to issue writ of the nature of mandamus, certiorari, prohibition, declaration and injunctions and shall be competent to adjudicate upon disputes
arising between the Federation and the federating units and shall be vested with the jurisdiction to interpret ambiguities in constitutional provisions
and shall be competent to issue injunctions, both interim and perpetual and could validate or declare as null and void a constitutional provision or a
subordinate law.
One expert said the proposed draft, if examined on the touchstone of the jurisdictional and judicial powers of the present day Supreme Court enshrined
in the Constitution of Pakistan, shall be tantamount to divide the powers of the apex court into two entities.
The Supreme Court, headed by Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, shall be reduced to the level of a civil court of civil and criminal appeals whereas all matters
of public and the national importance, including those warranting interpretation of status, laws and constitutional provisions shall be vested in the Federal
Constitutional Court and by such way, any disputes relating to the legitimacy of an incumbent of a government office like president, governor, etc, shall
be exclusively litigated before the Federal Constitutional Court.
The expert said the move appears to placate the apprehensions of the establishment and the presidency on the one hand and endeavour to appease the civil
society, media and the lawyers on the other.
Not only that the question of validity of President Musharraf shall remain buried, but also to pre-empt the ambitious pursuit of Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry
of frequent exercise of powers of the judicial review, a need for creation of a Federal Constitutional Court was felt and a resolution likely to be tabled
next week in parliament shall be qualified with the passage of the constitutional package.
The expert said if this draft law was enacted, the institution of the judiciary would be belittled with its powers divided and jurisdiction curtailed.
The immediate and most lethal impact of the constitutional package would be ordinary litigants and general citizens of the society with the withering away
of the writ jurisdiction of the high court and in the absence of the alternate remedy at provincial capitals and where the high court benches are functioning.
A great deal of inconvenience would be involved to present petitions to the Federal Constitutional Court at Islamabad.
The expert claimed that even the deposed judges would prefer to stay away from the chambers of the newly-styled Supreme Court and the lawyers community
was expected to put an en bloc opposition to the move.
The expert feared as the package was likely to affect the life of an ordinary citizen, the response from the public may aggravate the situation and if
the move failed on the floor of the house, either for dissent by the PML-N or for any other reason, the fate of the coalition government in Islamabad would
also be decided there and then.
